November One Night

On November 9th, we’ll will be having One Night.  Our speaker for this One Night will be Mr. Brian Adams.  He will be sharing his testimony.  Brian is the Youth minister at Southside, and he is a great guy.  I hope that everyone that can attend will be there.  The dramas are going to rock, and worship will be awesome as usual.  One of our drama team members put it this way, “when you leave this One Night, you’ll be wearing gold diapers.”  I’m not exactly sure what that means but I have to agree with it.  I hope to see everyone there, and try to bring a friend or two.

The Least of These

We began our ‘Jesus for President’ series this past Wednesday.  I feel that it is important as believers to take a look around the world and see where other people are hurting and how we can help.  I know that it is not God’s will that His children be focused only on themselves.  According to UNICEF, 26,500 to 30,000 children die everyday due to poverty.  This is shocking and this should burden the hearts of God’s children.  I’m not sure if it’s our government’s responsibility to solve this problem, but I am sure that the Church is called to do so.  In Matthew 25:40, Jesus tell’s us that when we’ve done it for one of the “least of these” that we did it for Him.  In the church, we teach that there are areas of obedience that should be followed such as bible study, prayer time, tithing, and evangelism.  These are huge parts of Christian living, but the scriptures also teach that service to others should be evident as well.  As a college ministry we have been pushing one another to serve corporately and in our personal lives.  We will be challenging each other to a equal hour commitment.  We want to challenge our college members to spend as much time serving others as they do in corporate worship and corporate bible study.  We are going to provide many chances to serve, and we pray that you will join  with us in preaching the gospel by serving those that are around us.  We’ll be adding a ‘Serving the World’ page that will give you information such as dates, times, and descriptions of ministry opportunities.

Jesus For President

In our Wednesday bible study, we are getting ready to enter into a series we’re calling ‘Jesus for President.’  We will be discussing faith and politics. As Christians, how involved should we be in politics? Should we be Patriotic? What should our stance be on war? Immigration? Civil unions or same sex marriages? How financially wealthy should we be while others struggle or go hungry all over the world?

I know that I’ve spoken with many brothers and sisters and they’ve wrestled with these issues and I have as well. We plan to journey through the scriptures to see where Jesus might stand on some of these subjects. We will also be hearing from leaders that represent different sides of several topics, but always weighing it against the scriptures. I really hope to have several debates between people to help begin dialog. ‘Jesus for President’ will begin on September 10th and continue for several weeks thereafter. I’m really looking forward to journeying through the scriptures, listening to spiritual and political leaders, and conversing with one another to seek God’s will for us politically.

Who are we?

Hello and welcome to Southside’s College Blog. I’m Ledger and I’m the student minister at Southside. Here at Southside we are joining a revolution that is taking place in the inner-city of Jackson, MS. Believers from many places are deciding to allow God to use them to do an amazing work in this city. Our college ministry exists only to serve. Our goal is to attract believers that feel a mission call on their life and at the same time we wish to create an atmosphere where a non-Christian would feel invited to seek Jesus. We do in-depth bible study in our small group bible studies on Sunday morning, and on Wednesday nights have an open forum type setup to tackle important and sometimes controversial issues. Our college ministry is all about serving God and the world through homeless ministry, tutoring at inner-city schools, working with a downtown nursing home, and hosting a service once a month called One Night which is targeted at college and high school ages. This blog is here to help communication and make sure everyone knows what’s going on. I look for to serving God with you in the future.
